Learning Disabled Artists in Leeds

Howard Haigh

Howard works in drawings and ceramics which often focus on the architectural elements of his home city he considers to be most significant.

He has a fast-paced creative imagination and spots the hidden potential in any situation. He will suggest dozens of ways to start or develop a project. He is supported in his work by The Bridge in Holbeck, and has exhibited work in Leeds Central Library.

For his BADS project, Howard focused on his love of animals and ‘going large’. He has a natural flair working with ceramics.

Howard’s main project was been the design and creation of a large ceramic dragon, made in segments, measuring 7 metres in total. The small dragon model took 20 minutes to complete (before firing). The scaling up took almost 6 months.

Alongside the dragon, Howard made portraits of people he knows. These were completed very quickly. Pictures were taken capturing specific movements of the body, which Howard then worked up into clay.

Howard worked alongside ceramicist Iman Meghraoua to learn the techniques and skills to upscale his work. He also worked with artists Bryan Tweddle and Emma Hardacre.

Howard’s work was exhibited for 3 weeks in May at Left Bank Leeds.
