Practically Theatre spent 2016 devising a sketch show, parts of which would be performed at Beyond 2016. We took part in the performance day at the West Yorkshire Playhouse. We were very excited to be a part of a something at a professional venue alongside so many different organisations. Practically Theatre rehearse every week in Wetherby. We began rehearsal for our sketch show Life’s Like That in January 2016, and had the performance ready in May. We devise all our own work. We do this by using different drama games and activities to generate ideas, and then choose what we would like to focus on. In 2016 we went for comedy. We focus on the skills of each individual performer, so if someone wants to sing or dance, they will certainly get that opportunity! We performed our show at two venues in Wetherby and at Knaresborough Feva festival. Creating this show was a challenge for us as we aren’t used to performing so many times in so many different places, but we pulled it off! We can’t wait to do it again in the future.
Beyond was exciting for us as we were able to perform to a different audience that wouldn’t necessarily usually come and watch our performances. It was also a brilliant opportunity for us to perform at a high profile venue like the Playhouse, and be a part of such a vibrant, creative community!
On the day, we all enjoyed seeing the amazing work that was created by other organisations in the area. We loved Mind the Gap’s ‘chickens’, and were moved by the dance performance. Being a part of Beyond has been important for us in making connections with different organisations and meeting people we hope to develop work with in the future. It has definitely inspired us to really challenge ourselves creatively, but also think about how we can adapt work to suit different venues and audiences.
